Timor Leste: Health in Isolated Communities

Isolation is caused by many things in Timor-Leste! Some people here are isolated by jungley forests where no clear road has been made. Other people live perched high on the sides and ridges of mountains, with roads that often are impassable due to landslides, mud or generally poor condition. MAF Timor-Leste loves partnering with organisations like SHARE who bring health and education to some of the most difficult to reach places in our world.

Light for Kargi’s Kids – MAF in Kenya

Kargi is one of the many areas in northern Kenya with only a vaguely defined airstrip. Without MAF, a trip to Nairobi would take almost 9 hours to drive in a car and 11 hours on Kargi’s few motorbikes. However, for most, the only option would be a 5-day trip on foot. Now, with MAF, it takes little more than 2 hours.

Sometimes I have been asked the question, “What does a MAF pilot do?” The answer is different for each country where MAF operates, and from one day to the next. From Death to Life

“She is not dead yet,” replied one of the villagers, “but will die soon.”

A 15-year-old girl was pregnant and trying to deliver, but the baby had turned. There was no healthcare at the time in the dense jungles of Kalimantan, Indonesia, on the island of Borneo. The people in her village had no hope that this girl, named Lihut, would live.

So they turned to the local witchdoctor.

He and a few other men decided to jump up and down on the girl’s belly, thinking this would help. Of course, it only caused further damage.

On a nearby grass airstrip, a small airplane—a Cessna 185—touched down and John Hook, a pilot with Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF), stepped out. Read what happened next here.
