Celebrating 50 Years of Papua New Guinea’s Independence and a Lifesaving Partnership with MAF
This week, Papua New Guinea (PNG) marks 50 years of independence – a milestone for the nation and its people. Across its rugged mountains, isolated highlands and remote islands, communities continue to thrive thanks to resilience, ingenuity and partnerships that ensure essential services reach even the most distant corners.
For more than 70 years, Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) has been privileged to support PNG’s remote communities. Flying light aircraft into areas beyond the reach of roads, MAF’s pilots deliver urgent medical evacuations, transport teachers and health workers, and provide a vital lifeline to villages otherwise cut off from health, education and opportunity.
“Papua New Guinea is part of MAF’s DNA,” says Dr. Chris Barnes, CEO of MAF Australia. “From the very beginning, Australians and Papua New Guineans have worked side by side to overcome the challenges of distance and terrain. As PNG celebrates this milestone, we honour the resilience of its people and the partnerships that continue to save lives.”
From mothers flown in critical emergencies to villages receiving essential supplies, MAF’s work highlights the enduring spirit of connection and care that supports PNG’s people every day. Today, MAF remains committed to ensuring isolation is never a barrier to health, hope or opportunity.
