When you serve with MAF, an everyday job becomes a tool for kingdom impact – bringing hope and healing to remote communities around the world.

  • What does it take

When most people ask this question, they’re asking about the basics; How many hours do I need? What licenses must I hold? What kind of experience must I have?

Important questions for sure, and generally a good place to start. But these questions do little to address the real question that matters most… “Do I have what it takes?”

First and foremost, MAF is looking for…

    • People called by God, qualified and dedicated with a passion to serve God in worldwide ministry…
    • People who will go the distance to share God’s love – no matter what the barriers may be…
    • People who want to serve God through their skills and talents to help overcome barriers to the Gospel…
    • People with servant’s attitudes that are flexible enough to adapt, while still able to work within the highest technical standards…
    • People who want to serve God through their skills and talents to help deliver relief and development in Jesus name…

In case you missed the recurring theme, let’s sum it up; above all else, it takes a servant heart first.

In fact, without the support of those “servant hearts” who have gone before, Mission Aviation Fellowship would not be where it is today: advancing God’s Kingdom around the world since 1946.

We can offer you the opportunity to join a dedicated group of Christian professionals, committed to showing the love of Christ through serving isolated communities across the world.

You will have experiences of a lifetime that you will want to share with friends and family. We also believe you will develop your professional and personal life skills, as well as your faith.

All our international staff are asked to commit to a minimum four-year term of service. They are also required to embark on a process of ministry partnership. Ministry Partnership involves the garnering sponsorship toward the program you intend serving in, as well as raising awareness about MAF encouraging prayer for the ministry. Usually within your church group but also associated friends in your greater network.

Serving with MAF, staff generally receive a financial living allowance, accommodation, medical cover and leave for holidays and home visits. For families joining MAF, allowances are also provided which include consideration for child education.

Any allowances are tailored to individual programs and locations and consider local conditions. Allowances offered will be determined in agreement with the national Resourcing Group you belong to, which will assist you while you are in the field. We know the prospect of Ministry Partnership can be daunting, however, we are here to help with all the training, guidance and tools you need to succeed.

Technical requirements: Our fleet consists of a variety of aircraft, from DHC-6-300 Twin Otters and GA8 Airvans to Cessna 182s, 206s and 208s, including Grand Caravans and an amphibious floatplane.

We are looking for pilots who have an International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) based Commercial Pilot Licence with an instrument rating and Class 1 medical certificate. This is the minimum licensing requirement for all pilot positions.
In addition to this, you must already possess a minimum number of flight hours, with a portion of these as a Pilot in Command (PIC). Finally, all Pilots must pass the MAF capability and Psychological assessments.

We know this is a lot to ask, but we want team members who can thrive not just survive and that is why we look for this unique blend of skills and qualities.

OUR MINIMUM FLIGHT HOURS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
    • 500 hours total flight time with 300 hours as PIC. With this level of hours, you will be classed as a Basic Pilot.
    • 1,000 hours total flight time with 500 hours as PIC. With this level of hours, you will be classed as an Experienced Pilot.

We need someone with an ICAO and ideally an EASA Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Licence and you should have a minimum of two years’ experience, which can have been achieved concurrently with the gaining of your license.

If you are looking to be an avionics engineer, we will also require evidence of two years’ experience together with a license for this specialism.

For a Chief Engineer we would like to see a broad licence coverage, appropriate to the aircraft MAF operate. Ideally a minimum of five years maintenance experience and a genuine desire to lead and develop local staff. The experience can have been gained on turbine or piston engine aircraft.

There are other crucial attributes we are looking for in order to join the MAF family. The desire to be a part of a close-knit team. A willingness to show initiative and to be proactive in your approach to your maintenance, repair and certification taskings. We would like a great communicator who will forge strong relationships with colleagues, customers and partners. Problem solving will come naturally to you and you are a stickler for accuracy. You will be comfortable with completing all manner of documentation, which is as crucial for the aviation industry as your practical skills. MAF prides itself on its quality, safety and hazard reporting management systems. You will be a main player in seeking opportunities for continual improvement in these areas.

The successful candidate will have excellent written and spoken English, demonstrated ability of successful leadership and/or management in their area of speciality, preferably of a multi-cultural team and experience of working in a developing country. In most cases this person will support the effective performance, physical and spiritual wellbeing of staff and develop partnerships with service users.

The successful candidate will be degree qualified, be able to demonstrate solid experience in the IT sector, possess good customer service skills and ideally have experience working in a cross cultural developing country.

MAF International also regularly has short term IT roles available. These roles can be for specific projects, to cover for IT staff away on home assignment, or to fill staffing gaps whilst replacement permanent staff are recruited.

Essential skills and/or experience for these roles are:

    • Windows server management
    • Network management
    • Desktop management and troubleshooting
    • Microsoft Office
    • Good customer service

    Desirable skills and/or experience are:

    • Living overseas
    • Working in a distributed team

    • Management candidates undergo role-specific assessments.
    • Spouses are also interviewed to ensure alignment and preparation for mission life.

If you’re training as a pilot or engineer with aspirations to serve with MAF, we’re here to guide you. It’s a significant journey, and we’re happy to assess your potential suitability early.

If you’re passionate about serving with MAF but don’t yet meet the minimum requirements, we’d still love to stay connected. MAF is happy to keep in touch with applicants as they gain relevant experience, and there are often events or activities in Australia where you can get involved.

We also encourage participation in Australian events or volunteer activities to learn more about our mission and connect with others on a similar journey. These events provide valuable insights and networking opportunities with current MAF staff and supporters.

Some locations require 500 hours, while others may need 1,000+ hours, depending on various operational complexities. These include factors such as challenging flying conditions, the specific requirements of the country’s Air Operator Certificate (AOC), and the demands of both the aircraft and the operating environment. These criteria ensure pilots are fully prepared to meet the unique challenges of serving in remote and sometimes rugged locations.

    Pilots must hold:

    • A Commercial Pilot License (CPL)
    • An advanced instrument rating
    • A Class 1 Medical Certificate

    Desirable:
    Flight instructor rating

MAF pilots work within the duty hours set by each country’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), typically around 38 hours per week.

Staff receive annual leave and public holidays as per their location. Additionally, international staff serving overseas receive a 40-day home assignment every two years for sponsorship-raising, connecting with supporters, and completing medical checks. Flexibility is sometimes required for emergencies, such as medevac flights.

The timeline depends on the role and training requirements, typically taking 6–12 months. Pre-field preparation includes:

    • Induction and support-raising
    • Cross-cultural training
    • Practical relocation preparation and arrangements
    • Bible college

Instead of a traditional allowance, MAF embraces a ministry partnership model that fosters collaboration between staff and their community of supporters. This approach invites staff to build a network of partners who join them in their mission through prayer and financial sponsorship.

MAF provides comprehensive training and ongoing support to help staff connect with individuals, churches, and organisations who share a passion for the mission. This model creates a shared journey, where supporters become active participants in the work God is doing through MAF, while staff are empowered to serve with the resources and encouragement they need.

MAF prioritises the well-being of its staff and their families, placing a high importance on family needs when determining deployment locations. Key factors such as spousal work opportunities, visa accessibility, and schooling options for children are carefully evaluated for each assignment.

MAF is deeply committed to supporting families, ensuring that staff are not deployed on standard assignments without their spouse or dependent children joining them. By fostering a family-friendly approach, MAF aims to create an environment where both staff and their loved ones can thrive in their mission service.

Your home church is a key partner in your journey with MAF, playing a vital role in confirming your calling and walking alongside you with prayer, encouragement, and pastoral support—before, during, and after your service. While financial support from your church is optional, MAF deeply values the collaborative partnership and the shared mission to bring hope to isolated communities.

We encourage open dialogue with your church community to strengthen this partnership, and we’re happy to arrange for an MAF speaker to visit your church. This visit can inspire and engage your congregation, offering a shared vision of the mission you’re undertaking together.

In most locations, medical care is available, and where necessary, we support travel to higher levels of care. MAF staff undergo medical and psychological assessments to ensure they are well-suited to the overseas environment. Staff are also provided with health guidelines specific to their location, which should be followed carefully.

As part of MAF’s ongoing duty of care, periodic medical and psychological assessments are conducted to monitor well-being. Additionally, MAF’s dedicated People Care pastoral team is committed to ensuring staff have access to comprehensive support while serving overseas. This team provides ongoing care, guidance, and encouragement, addressing both personal and spiritual needs to help staff thrive in their mission
