MAF Volunteer Program – Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF)?
Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) is a global Christian organisation that uses aviation to bring help, hope and healing to isolated communities around the world. Through aircraft, we reach places others can’t – supporting medical care, disaster response, education, and sharing the love of Jesus.
2. What do MAF volunteers do?
MAF volunteers support the mission in a variety of ways here in Australia. This might include helping at events, connecting with churches, assisting with admin, supporting fundraising efforts, or helping raise awareness of MAF’s work.
3. Do I need aviation experience to volunteer?
Not at all! Most volunteer roles are not aviation-related. What matters most is your heart to serve, reliability, and willingness to get involved. Volunteers are the back-bone of our organisation and are responsible for many key areas of the ministry, outside of aviation.
4. What skills or experience are you looking for?
We welcome people from all backgrounds. Whether you’re great with people, organised behind the scenes, creative, or passionate about sharing stories – there’s a place for you. During the application process we will aim to fit you in within the place that works best for your giftings and skills.
5. How much time do I need to commit?
We offer flexible opportunities. You might volunteer occasionally at events, help seasonally, or be involved more regularly – whatever works best for your schedule. We understand volunteering can be a big commitment so we aim to fit it into your already busy life in a way that you value and look forward to being involved. We do ask you make yourself available for team meetings and reply to messages and emails where possible.
6. Where are volunteer opportunities located?
Many opportunities are local (such as events or church engagement), while some roles can be done remotely. We’ll help match you with opportunities available in your area. Our head office is based in Sydney so office based roles will need to be carried out from that location but all other roles will be done remotely through different events, church locations and what not.
7. Do I need to be a Christian to volunteer?
MAF is a Christian organisation, and our mission is faith-based. While you don’t need to have everything figured out, we do ask that volunteers are supportive of our mission and values.
8. Will I receive training and support?
Yes! We’ll equip you with everything you need to feel confident in your role, and our team will be there to support you along the way. We have orientations and training set up for new volunteers and will be available every step of the way to guide and support, through group training evenings and having modules etc.
9. What is the application process like?
After submitting your application form, our team will be in touch to get to know you, talk through your interests, and help find a role that’s a great fit. This process might take a little while but trust this means you are the right person for the job.
10. Is there a minimum age requirement?
Volunteers typically need to be 16 years or older. Some roles may have additional requirements, and younger volunteers may need parental consent.
11. Can I volunteer as part of a group or church?
Absolutely! We love partnering with churches and groups. Whether it’s helping at events or supporting campaigns, there are great opportunities to serve together. We have campaigns that run all year that our churches can get involved in, from Fuel For Father’s Day to Mother’s Day Campaign we have churches support us in many ways.
12. Will volunteering cost me anything?
Most volunteer roles don’t require any cost. Occasionally, there may be optional events or travel expenses, but we’ll always communicate this clearly.
13. Can volunteering lead to future opportunities with MAF?
Yes! Volunteering is a great way to get connected. Many volunteers grow into deeper involvement, leadership roles, or explore other opportunities within MAF.
14. Why volunteer with MAF?
Because you’ll be part of something meaningful. Every conversation, event, and act of service helps bring practical support and the love of Jesus to people in some of the world’s most remote places. Volunteers help share our story and get the message out to the masses.
