South Sudan is the world’s youngest internationally recognised country, yet it faces enormous challenges.

Conflict across its border in Sudan has forced millions of people from their homes, with many seeking safety in South Sudan.

Meanwhile, communities across the country continue to face significant needs of their own.

Reaching people with food, healthcare and practical support can be difficult, particularly in remote areas where roads are limited or impassable.

And for communities with little opportunity to hear the Gospel, distance can also be a barrier to sharing the Good News of Jesus.

People journey into South Sudan every day for many different reasons:

  • Some are seeking safety after fleeing conflict in Sudan;
  • Others are bringing food, healthcare and practical support to families in need;
  • And some are answering God’s call to share the Good News of Jesus with people who have never heard it.

Your generosity helps MAF make these journeys possible, flying people and essential supplies to communities that are difficult to reach by road.

This Christmas, you can help make these journeys possible by giving towards:

  • Practical care – select Humanitarian Flights
  • The hope of Jesus – select Flying the Gospel Further

Last year, MAF flew 4,780 flights in South Sudan.

These flights supported humanitarian and development work, medical and health services, and evangelism and church ministry.

Since war began in Sudan in 2023, millions of people have been forced to flee their homes.

Osman knows what it means to lose almost everything. After two of his children were killed in the crossfire of war, he fled with his wife and surviving children, including a four-month-old baby.

Their journey through South Sudan towards Uganda took three months. They faced hunger, theft and nights sleeping on the streets. Today, the family lives beneath a tarpaulin, and Osman worries about his children’s future.

Help make essential journeys possible

For people displaced by conflict, reaching safety is only the beginning. Humanitarian organisations and medical teams also need to reach families with food, healthcare and practical support.

Across South Sudan, MAF flights help these organisations reach refugee settlements and isolated communities where travelling by road can be difficult or impossible.

Jean Thierry Nshimirimana and Moise Nsengiyumva travelled from Burundi to South Sudan because they believe God has called them to share the Gospel with people who have never heard it.

After a two-day journey, 1,255 km bus journey to Nairobi, the friends had two options: a further 21-hour in a bus, or a 2.5-hour plane flight to cover the 1,100 km from Nairobi to their destination of Torit in South Sudan.

Today, they are leading Discovery Bible Studies, connecting with young people and preparing to reach communities beyond Torit.

Moise says:

“The work is bigger than I thought. Here there are many unreached people. I am excited about that!”

He also recognises the difference MAF makes to their ministry:

“Thank you for what MAF is doing. It is making easier the journeys and travel for the work that the missionaries are doing.”

For Jean Thierry and Moise, a MAF flight is more than transport. It helps them take the Gospel of Jesus further, across distances that might otherwise be difficult to bridge.
