A Little Note

There’s a line from O Holy Night that lingers long after Christmas decorations are packed away:
“A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices.”

As we step into a new year, many of us do so with a mix of gratitude, relief and maybe a bit of weariness from everything the last year held. The world is still complex, still heavy in places and not everything resets on 1 January.

But this line reminds us of something profound: hope doesn’t wait for perfect conditions.

God offers hope right in the middle of our uncertainty, weakness and fatigue – just as He did that first Christmas and just as He does for the year ahead.

The “thrill of hope” is often quiet and steady, rather than dramatic:
a moment of peace, a gentle reassurance, a sense that God is closer than we realised. And because of that, a weary world – and weary hearts – can still rejoice.

It echoes the promise of Isaiah 40:31 (NIV):
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.”

As we begin this new year, that’s our confidence:
our hope is not in a new calendar, but in a faithful God.

He goes before us, walks with us and carries what we cannot. His strength renews us. His presence steadies us. His hope lifts our eyes.

May this year be one where we see His hope in quiet, unexpected and deeply reassuring ways – guiding our steps and lighting the path in front of us.

Happy New Year.
