Save a life in PNG

This is baby Steven born in Rumginae, PNG.
He's a little MAF miracle.

Loretta, Steven's mother, had been in labour for a whole day, but her contractions weren't strong enough to push the baby out. She and her baby were in life-threatening danger.

The harsh reality is that many of these isolated areas are completely cut off from the health care that we in Australia have such easy access to. If MAF is not there to rescue them in their time of need, no-one will.

Thankfully, we were able to reach Loretta and deliver her to a hospital in time for a safe birth. Mum and baby are doing well!

Who is MAF and what is a medevac?

For 70 years MAF has flown over rivers, jungles, swamps and mountains to bring medical assistance, community development, Christian Hope and this kind of disaster relief. Today it is a network of 1400 aviation professionals operating 140 aircraft in over 30 countries.

What is a medevac:
A medevac is the short way of saying medical evacuation. Essentially its an emergency response to someone who is dire need of medical support but is cut off from hospitals or other medical support.

How will my money be used?

You donation will support the medevac ministry in PNG. With your partnership, MAF is serving a network of over 200 destinations in PNG – more than Qantas serves worldwide.

The communities attached to these destinations are extremely isolated. To us a mountain is majestic but to people in the remote parts of PNG, it is the reason a simple birth complication can lead to death.

Together we are able to overcome mountains, jungles, rivers and swamps, and turn days of travel into minutes.

How much does a medevac cost in PNG?

It depends! Flight times can be anywhere from 20 minutes to two hours, depending on the location of the remote community and its closest hospital.

But to give you an idea, we perform around 500 medevacs in PNG each year, and this typically costs us around $200,000 USD to do. So that makes the cost of an “average” medevac flight $400 USD ($540 AUD).
