PAPUA NEW GUINEA RELIEF APPEAL

I will give $

On the 26th of February, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake shook Papua New Guinea.

This quake has been followed by numerous aftershocks, including one at magnitude 6.

While the major cities experienced only minor damage, it is the isolated parts of PNG – the areas that are already vulnerable – who have experienced the full force of these earthquakes.

It is currently estimated that:
• 67 people have lost their lives (and many more are seriously injured)
• 7000 people have lost their homes
• 147,000 are in severe need of food, water and sanitation

Help us reach the remote and isolated parts of PNG with food, clean water, sanitation solutions and medical care.

Help us reach the isolated communities affected by the recent earthquake in Papua New Guinea with relief, medical supplies and community development.

Who is MAF?

For 70 years MAF has flown over rivers, jungles, swamps and mountains to bring medical assistance, community development, Christian Hope and this kind of disaster relief. Today it is a network of 1400 aviation professionals operating 140 aircraft in around 25 countries.

MAF flew help to the tsunami disaster in Indonesia in 2004, Cyclone Sidr in Bangladesh in 2007, the Haiti earthquake in 2010, the Horn of Africa famine in 2011, the Ebola epidemic in Congo in 2013 and the earthquake in Nepal in 2014.

HOW WE ARE HELPING:

MAF has been serving the remote areas of PNG for over 65 years.

In conjunction with MAF Technology Services (CRMF), we have developed a network of radio communications and airstrips to serve these isolated communities.

We are in a good position to serve these remote areas in their time of need.

Aid agencies are scrambling to reach the isolated areas, but with very limited infrastructure available, many will rely on MAF to gain access.

Together, with your support, we can reach these areas.

HOW WE WILL USE YOUR DONATION:

There is an estimated need of approximately $30,000 AUD to cover the emergency relief flights during this time.

Over and above this we have committed to helping raise an additional $120,000 to help fund the PNG program costs for 2018.

In this time of rebuilding it is critical that MAF in PNG is able to confidently continue to serve the remote communities.

You will help us deliver hope.

This is PNG's biggest earthquake in a hundred years.

Now is their time of need. Help us reach the remote and isolated parts of PNG with food, clean water, sanitation solutions and medical care. Help us deliver hope.

MAF has already been involved in a preliminary emergency response to these areas and we anticipate that our involvement will greatly increase over the coming weeks.

Emergency medical evacuations
Our first medevac passenger following the incident was Nagei Waruka, from a remote village called Huya. She was covered by one of the landslides. She survived but tragically lost her entire family in the landslide.

She is pregnant and in a critical condition with injuries to her legs, back and arms. Men from the village carried her across a river and up to the airstrip where MAF was able to transport her to Mt Hagen for treatment.

Please note, donations will be applied to the emergency relief fund first. Once the $30,000 target is reached, additional donations will be applied to the PNG program costs needed for 2018.

Should we exceed that target amount, your donation will be used to support other programs where the need is deemed to be the greatest.
